Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park Welcomes New Bear

Families who made their way to the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park were treated to a new member, Saturday.

An Andean Bear named "Bernard" was released into his new home at the zoo for the first time, and visitors got to see the rare bear in his captivity. There are only 75 bears of his species left in North America. The zoo says  having him here in Binghamton is a privilege.

"The goal of bringing animals like this to the zoo is to bring awareness. We want people to come to the zoo to obviously enjoy the animals they're looking at, enjoy watching the animals, learn about animals, but also understand what they're going through with their wild counterparts in the wild," said Dave Orndorf, Animal Curator at Binghamton Zoo.

Bernards mom, who lives in Buffalo, is 35 years old, making her the oldest known Andean Bear in the world.
