Hunting Safety Tips for Opening Day

Come sunrise Saturday morning many hunters will be in the woods for the opening day of firearms season.

We spoke with New York State Hunter Safety Instructor Jim Ruth about how to keep yourself and others safe while in the woods.

He says there are three rules everyone should abide by, treat every gun as if it were loaded; keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction; and be sure of your target and what's beyond.

"New York has opened up a lot of land for high powered rifles and your talking about a 1,000 to 1,500 yards that you can kill with that gun. You're responsible for that bullet until it stops," NYS Hunter Safety Instructor Jim Ruth.

Ruth also suggests wearing blaze orange while in the woods and make sure that the brightness of that orange hasn't faded.

The number one injury for New York State hunters involves people falling out of trees from not using harnesses.
