BU Women's Basketball drops season opener

VESTAL, N.Y.  Mackenzie Loesing scored a game-high 16 points and Margeaux Gupilan added 15 points, powering Buffalo (1-0) to a 65-47 win over Binghamton (0-1) in a non-conference womens basketball game on Friday evening at the Events Center. The game marked the start of the Bearcats 13th season at the NCAA Division I level.

Loesing and Gupilan combined for 17 points in the first half as the Bulls built a 36-19 lead at the break. Buffalo shot 43 percent from the field (12-of-28) while the Bearcats could manage only 17 percent (5-for-29) during the first 20 minutes.

Its disappointing that we didnt come out stronger, head coach Nicole Scholl said. We didnt shoot well and play good defense. The second half was a different story but we need to start off better. Give Buffalo credit. They came out strong to start the game.

Up 12-6 five minutes into the game, Buffalo scored 11 straight points to go up 23-6 with 10:00 left in the first half. Loesing had five of her points during that stretch. From there, Bulls went up 36-19 at the break.

Things did not start out any better in the second half for the Bearcats, who fell behind 42-21 with 18:10 left in regulation. Binghamton pulled to within 51-36 on a jumper by sophomore guard Kandace Newry with 8:04 left to go. They then fell behind 63-38 with 3:48 remaining on a three-point field goal by Slone Walton.

Junior forward Sherae Swinson finished with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Freshman forward Kristin Ross came off the bench to add nine points.

Walton added 10 points for Buffalo.

Buffalo converted 17 Binghamton turnovers into 27 points. In addition, the Bulls held a 23-14 lead in bench points.

Binghamton heads to Bucknell for a 7 p.m. game next Thursday.
