More Accidents During Deer Mating Season

The peak of deer mating season is also the peak of car accidents involving deer. As a result, New York State Police are urging drivers to take extra caution on the roads.

Police say drivers need to obey the speed limit more than ever and leave at least a car length between themselves and other cars. This in case the car in front of you gets into an accident caused by a deer. Also whatever you do, don't swerve.

"Beeping your horn or flashing the headlights doesn't seem to be anything that works. The only thing you can do is reduce your speed as fast as possible, try not to leave your lane because you don't want to make the situation worse by swerving. Be aware that there are other motorists on the roadway having to deal with it," said Trooper Nathan Riegal of the New York State Police.

The peak of the deer-mating season can run through the end of November.
