Dunking the Principal a Reward for Summer Reading

Some students at George F. Johnson Elementary in Endicott got a chance to "dunk the principal" at recess Friday.

It's part of the schools summer reading program. 140 students from grades K-5 who read 1,000 minutes or more this summer lined up for a chance to dunk their new principal Larry Dake.

"The students' excitement and enthusiasm have been tremendous. With all the challenges in education it's just great to promote reading at home and families reading together.  There's a lot of left hand throwers and a lot of lefties I wasn't scouting," said Principal Larry Dake.

Dunk the principal used to be a school tradition but stopped four years ago until teachers decided to bring it back this year.
