Discussions Continue Over Vestal Budget

In Vestal, the town board is looking at its budget for the new year.

Supervisor John Schaffer is trying to retain services, and update equipment, while working within a limited spending plan.

On Monday, discussions centered on the fire department, and what it needs to maintain the kind of protection Schaffer says the town deserves.  For instance, can Vestal afford to replace a fire rescue truck?

"It's a ten passenger chassis and it goes out on all major accidents on the highway. We can obviously carry a lot more passengers on it, it has the jaws of life on it, an updated generator, and updated hydraulic system. It's something that's long overdue. Again, it's 25 years old," said Vestal Town Supervisor John Schaffer.

Replacement of the fire truck rescue truck would cost about 600-thousand dollars.  Purchase of it would be decided by a referendum.  On Monday, the police department budget was also discussed and possible replacement of vehicles it needs.
