We ARE talking about playoffs
8/17/2013 (Updated 8/18/2013 12:54:51 AM)BINGHAMTON, NY The Binghamton Mets officially punched their ticket into the postseason with a 5-4 win over the New Britain Rock Cats on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. They packed all of their offense into a five-run sixth as Binghamton became playoff bound for the first time since 2004.
The team was forced to win in comeback fashion, as the Rock Cats took an early lead against Mark Cohoon. Miguel Sano led off the second inning with a long solo blast into the railyard in left field for the first run of the game. After a walk and a double, Danny Santana blooped a two-run single later in the inning to give New Britain a 3-0 cushion. In the top of the fifth, Santana drove in another run with an RBI double into the left-centerfield gap.
Meanwhile New Britain starter Matt Summers held Binghamton hitless through five innings before hitting a wall in the sixth. Binghamton busted out five runs on four hits, and took advantage of three walks in the frame. Summers walked the first two batters of the frame, and gave up an RBI single by Josh Rodriguez down the left field line for Binghamtons first run. He was then removed from the game for Ryan ORourke with runners at the corners and one out. ORourke walked Rhyne Hughes to load the bases, and Allan Dykstra slapped an RBI infield hit off of the third base bag to make it a 4-2 game.
After facing two batters, ORourke handed the ball to Cole Johnson with the bases loaded. Cory Vaughn welcomed Johnson to the game by knocking a two-run single, tying the game at four. After a fielders choice, Travis Taijeron snuck a ground ball past Sano at third base for the go-ahead double.
The big inning put Cohoon in line for his ninth win of the season. The southpaw battled through five innings and gave up four runs on seven hits, but picked up his fifth win in as many starts. Chase Huchingson was the first reliever for Cohoon, and he worked through two exciting, but scoreless innings. New Britain loaded the bases against Huchingson with a single and two walks in the eighth, but a Daniel Ortiz flyout ended the threat.
With Jeff Walters unavailable, Chasen Bradford was brought into the game for a save situation in the ninth. He rose up to the occasion, and went 1-2-3 to put Binghamton into the playoffs. Cohoon (9-3) picked up the win, while ORourke (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he failed to record an out.
The B-Mets (79-47) and Rock Cats (58-68) conclude their three-game series on Sunday night at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Erik Goeddel takes the mound for Binghamton against RHP D.J. Baxendale for New Britain. First pitch is at 6:35 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show starting at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
