National Ice Cream Day

JOHNSON CITY -- Usually you don't need an excuse to indulge in a scoop of ice cream. But on Sunday there was even more reason.

It was national ice cream day. Sugar Lips on Riverside Drive in Johnson City was packed with hungry customers earlier Sunday.  The store celebrated the holiday in true ice cream fashion, by serving up the treat for hot and hungry customers.  Employees said it was a busy past week during the heat wave and made note of the top selling ice cream flavors of the season.

"It has been pretty busy today, lots of sales, especially with all that heat that has been happening in the area. Most popular flavors right now are the Superhero flavors for the little kids. My favorite flavor is Campfire Smores, it is very, very good," said Chloe Solan, an ice cream scooper at Sugar Lips.

Amanda and Andrew Sprague-Getsy said their favorite flavors are Whitelightning and Chocolate.

A fun fact about ice cream, this cold treat is actually an ancient dessert, being served as early as 400 b.c.

Ice cream first reached America in the Mid-18th Century and is now America's favorite dessert.
