Pushing For Fair Elections In New York State

Are New York State elections fair? Some say no, and want public financing of campaigns to help level the playing field.

With time running out in the legislative session, Citizen Action is trying to put pressure on state senators to allow the bill to come onto the floor for a vote. The Assembly has already passed the measure.

These activists want the independent Democratic senators who along with Republicans have a majority in the senate to push for a vote.

"So together they promised us that they would bring forth a Campaign Finance Reform Bill and we would like to see it come to the floor for a vote," said Lawrence Parham of Citizen Action.

Under the proposed plan the state would match small contributions on a six to one basis. And a candidate could chose to opt in or out of the public financing system.
