Bokwa Fitness Combines Simple Moves For Intense Workout

It may look like Zumba, but it's actually Bokwa.

"That was a hybrid name from boxing and Quedo dancing, which is South African-style dance.  There's some moves you'll see, some light boxing moves and a lot of the footwork is Quedo," said Marysol Burgos, instructor.

The hour long fitness class is made up of moves that follow the shapes of letters and numbers.

"You can just spell out the letters with your feet in a very low impact, not very ballistic, just moving your feet according to the letter but then you could take it to a high intensity doing some jumps," said Burgos.

Burgos says the simple moves can be modified for all fitness levels and that has attracted all ages to the class.

"Kids can do it because it is so easy to follow.  You can have a mother and her kid doing the same steps," said Burgos.

"It's really repetitive so you know what's next without really having to think.  You just enjoy the music and workout," said Margaret Barillaro of Owego.

But it's a class that is sure to get your heart pumping.

"This is a cardio class.  Purely cardio.  So, your heart rate's going up throughout the class and it's staying there.  There is no intervals.  It's not going down because its a continuous class," said Burgos.
