Binghamton University Hosts Walk for Suicide Prevention

BINGHAMTON -- After losing loved ones to suicide, families and students set out to prevent more unnecessary deaths.

Binghamton University hosted its first walk to raise money and awareness about suicide.  Coordinators say suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students. One family says losing their brother inspired them to help others who are struggling with depression.

"He was a huge piece of our family and it's very sad.  This is a way to remember him.  With more awareness and more depression screenings and mental health screenings with the fundraising, that will help," said Erin Hoppes, who walked in honor of brother Ben Ashley, who died 11 years ago.
