Getting Young Professionals To Downtown Binghamton

How about a revitalization of downtown Binghamton by having young professionals move in?

There are national trends of newcomers in the workforce as well as empty-nesters moving to urban cores. Officials would like to see that in Binghamton. A consultant for the City says the building blocks for housing units downtown that are accessible to multiple age and income groups, and not just college students, are in place.

But government help, such as tax credits and brownfield development, are needed to spur the building.

"Binghamton downtown has a lot of appeal because it has a very interesting stock of buildings, number one. Number two, the commercial in downtown has been improving with a lot of restaurants, a lot of entertainment, a lot of opportunities," said Meg Sowell of Real Estate Strategies.

Sowell says another issue, much of Binghamton's housing stock is old. 76 percent was build before 1960, with 52 percent built before 1940.
