PA Regulators Say Methane Emissions Are Natural

It was a presence of methane gas that some had blamed on fracking, and one that brought big-name celebrities to northeast Pennsylvania.

But Monday that state's Department of Environmental Protection says the methane found in some Franklin Forks wells is naturally occurring.

Back in January Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, and Susan Sarandon came to the Franklin Forks home of Tammy Manning, whose well has high levels of methane.

Monday the DEP said that methane is consistent with what is found from water at nearby salt springs state park,  which the agency says has naturally-occurring methane.

The DEP says it's 16-month investigation found the gas in the water from the private wells was not of the same origin as the natural gas in the nearby gas wells.
