Healthier Food Standards For Broome County

Broome County could be leading the way in adopting healthier food standards.

County Executive Debbie Preston announced Thursday that Broome is taking steps to become the first municipality in Upstate New York to implement food procurement standards put together by the governor.

Broome County Central Foods serves approximately 1.8 million meals throughout the year to nursing homes, Meals on Wheels, children's centers, and the Broome County Jail.

The Broome County Health Department received a five year grant of almost a half million dollars from the CDC to help prevent cancers caused by obesity. The county will still have to chip in.

"We know we're going to have to put more money into the budget regarding this, but in the end we'll get that in return because of the health issues and what it's going to do as far as cancer and anything we can do to prevent cancer cases in Broome County we're going to do it," said Broome County Executive Debbie Preston.

Preston doesn't know just how much money will be needed--but indicates that it would not be a major expenditure.
