Area Unemployment Numbers Gradually Decreasing

As we've been reporting, unemployment numbers continue to go down for the Binghamton area, but it's not by the amounts that might portend a big recovery at least not yet.

The big drop was between February and March of this year when the jobless rate dropped by almost a full percentage point from 9.6 to 8.8.

But compared to last March, the drop has been negligible.

"We are down over the year as well but only about .2 of a percentage point so it's a real small amount. We're still in the eight range which is really uncomfortably high for this local area where in good times we're usually in the fives," said Regional Labor Market Analyst, Christian Harris.

Harris says seasonal hiring is underway, which should lead to more jobs, and a further drop in the unemployment rate.
