Detail: The 2015 Central New York Scottish Games and Celtic Festival will be held on August 8, 2015 at Long Branch Park in Liverpool (near Syracuse), rain or shine. Gates open at 9am with individual piping, drumming and dancing competitions going on all morning. Opening ceremonies with the massing of all the participating bagpipe bands and drum majors is scheduled for noon (get there early for parking). The Festival concludes with another massing of the bagpipe bands and closing ceremonies at 5pm. A ceilidh (party) follows from 6-8pm under the entertainment tent! Included in the day's events are massed bagpipe bands and band competitions; solo bagpiping, dancing, drumming and drum major competitions; Irish and Scottish dancing demonstations; Scottish, Irish, and American foods; clan tents and geneology; Highland cattle on display; Scottish and Irish dry goods vendors; Harmony of Harps; Scottish Small Pipe Society; and amateur, heavy and master class Scottish athletics (throwing the telephone pole, among other events: come out and give it a try!) Come sit down under the Entertainment Tent and listen to Celtic music being performed all morning and throughout the afternoon by Searson, and Sisters of Murphy, and during the party afterwards. Students in Scottish arts can apply for scholarships during the day at the various Games tents. Scholarship applications are also in the Games program. Detail: On 4/29/2015, Brent Thornton (age 27) was in a logging accident. While chopping down a tree another tree fell on him. Brent was trapped under the tree for three hours before he was found. Brent had life threatening injuries and was airlifted to Wilson Hospital, where he remained in ICU for sometime before being transferred to a regular floor and eventually on to General Hospital for physical rehabilitation. He now continues his healing at home while still having to attend numerous doctor and physical therapy appointments. His injuries include: a crushed vertebrae, a broken clavicle, broken ribs, internal bruising, a punctured lung and two areas of bleeding on the brain. Brent is going to have a long road to recovery that is likely to take several months. He is the sole financial support for his family that includes his Fiancé and stay at home mom Kristan, their son Gunner, age 7 and brand new daughter Paislee age 3 months. These types of injuries could bring any family to financial ruin, but this is especially true for the self employed. To help Brent and his family, the WP American Legion will be hosting a Chicken BBQ dinner and Chinese Basket Raffle. All proceeds will go to Brent.

Detail: Come learn the basics of how to site, design and install photovoltaic (PV) systems at HALF THE STANDARD PRICE! The course includes sizing systems for both grid-connected and off-grid PV systems. We will look at the solar resource, the problems associated with shading and what is the best orientation and tilt for PV arrays. We’ll discuss the basic sizing and design of systems to serve a given electrical load. We’ll go over safety practices for installers and study the electrical code for PV systems in some detail. We will study various mounting systems for PV arrays and how they affect roofs. There will be various in-class activities such as experimenting with solar cells, creating an IV curve for a solar panel, measuring irradiance, measuring shade conditions, and doing design projects. We will install a grid-connected PV system and experiment with a stand-alone system at ETM. This course can be applied toward your NABCEP prerequisites.
