Human Remains Found in Chemung River Identified
New York State Police say they have identified human remains that were found in the Chemung River in September 2024.
The remains have been identified as Matthew A. Barber of Elmira.
According to police on September 28, they responded to a report of human remains found along the Chemung River near Interstate 86 and Exit 59.
Police say two kayakers discovered what appeared to be a human skull, and immediately contacted police.
A search led to the additional discovery of a left hip bone.
The Binghamton University Forensic Anthropology Lab and the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Center confirmed a DNA match to Matthew A. Barber, who was also a missing person previously investigated by the Elmira Police Department.
This is suspicious in nature.
This is an on-going investigation.
