Binghamton City Council member Olamni Porter for Binghamton's first district has resigned from the City Council.

According to 6th District Council Member and Majority Leader Rebecca Rathmell, Porter submitted his resignation late last week.

The city council will elect a representative for District One for the rest of the year before a special election will take place in November for the remainder of the term.

The former Democratic Council Member was elected to the council in 2023, defeating Republican nominee Mary Ann Callahan after the seat was vacated by Giovanni Scaringi.

Rathmell provided Fox 40 with the following statement:

"Former Councilmember Porter submitted his resignation late last week. While we are sad to see him step back, we respect his decision and wish him the best. City Council Members are otherwise working with local democratic party leadership to identify potential replacements and have requested names for consideration. Per local law, we will appoint a representative for District 1 for the rest of the year by February 10th, and a special election to determine the remainder of the term will be held in November."
