Patrol Officer Resigns After Surveillance Video Posted on Social Media
A patrol officer has submitted his resignation after surveillance video regarding an incident at Courtside Bar and Grill was shared on social media.
According the mayor's office, the mayor accepted the resignation Friday. On December 27th, emergency services responded to 56 Court Street in Binghamton and found three people injured, including a 20-year-old female, who had sustained serious physical injury. The victim was injured after a beverage she was served combusted, causing a large spurt of fire.
During the following weekend, video of the surveillance footage was posted to the social media site Reddit. The department's Office of Internal Affairs began conducting an investigation into the unauthorized sharing of video evidence that was shared on social media, according to a statement from the mayor that was released in the days following the incident on the 27th.
At the time, the officer was suspended without pay indefinitely. Now, the officer has resigned.
The mayor issued a statement regarding the resignation saying: "Today, I accepted the resignation — in lieu of termination — of the patrol officer responsible for the unauthorized dissemination of video evidence from the Dec. 27 fire at 56 Court St. While the Office of Internal Affairs investigation remains open, this is a significant step in upholding the professionalism and accountability residents deserve from the Binghamton Police Department. It’s hard to find an elected official who supports law enforcement more than I do. But in turn, I expect our police officers meet the highest standards. My action today reinforces that expectation.”
