The Binghamton City Council introduced its good cause eviction legislation at its work session at City Hall earlier tonight.

The legislation looks to increase housing stability, combat unreasonable rent increases, and protect tenants from unjust evictions. Under the legislation, a tenant could still be evicted for violating a lease or causing a nuisance.

Nearly one-third of the city of Binghamton faces poverty and safe and affordable housing has become difficult to find.

Good Cause is a state law passed back in April 2024 and requires local municipal opt-ins.

"56% of the population are renters in Binghamton, over half are rent burdened. So they're already struggling with the cost of rent," Council Member for the 4th District Nate Hotchkiss said. "I think this is very reasonable to prevent more price gouging or really like just pricing people out of being able to afford a home."
