The United States Department of Justice says a Dominican Republic man was sentenced to five years imprisonment for illegally re-entering the United States after previously being convicted of an aggravated felony.

The DOJ says Carlos Manuel Valdez admitted prior to being deported in 2019, he was convicted of several Massachusetts state felony offenses, including assaulting a police officer and possessing narcotics with the intent to distribute them.

In February 2023, Valdez was found in Broome County in a vehicle containing over a kilogram of fentanyl. He was charged by state authorities in Broome County and sentenced to six years imprisonment in state court. He was ordered to serve 30 months of his federal sentence consecutively, meaning that 30 months of his federal sentence will not begin until after he has completed his sentence from New York State.
