It's that time again where Fox 40 is honoring the teachers within our community who go above and beyond for their students. 

This week the spotlight is on Binghamton City School District where we are highlighting Joel Smales.

Smales is the Band Director for Binghamton High School, and has been teaching for over twenty years.

As someone who never imagined themselves as a teacher, Smales goes above and beyond inspiring his students, and giving them knowledge that will last them beyond the walls of the band room. 

"I try to make music and what I teach, not as much as learning the instrument, but learning life skills. Not everyone is going to major in music when they leave here, but everyone is going to go out into the real world and be a contributor and be a leader," said Smales.  "I want to instill in them confidence, experience, and how to be a productive member of society. So I just try to help them where they're at."
