For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, a popular roller derby training course has returned to Binghamton.

Today saw the beginning of Roller Derby 101 -- an eight-week program hosted by Parlor City Roller Derby. According to its Facebook page, Parlor City Roller Derby is Binghamton's first and only all-gender flat-track roller derby league.

The course aims to be all-inclusive, with no experience required and the first lesson free.

Over 40 people signed up for the course, exceeding the expectations of organizers like Natalie Schumacher.

"We are so glad that the Binghamton area has said a very loud and enthusiastic 'Yes -- I want roller derby in my community, I want to play it and learn more about it,'" Schumacher said.

After the first day, classes are priced at just $5 -- led by a coach and seasoned skaters.

"So anyone who's curious about Roller Derby 101 can come down, get outfitted with some gear and try it out," Schumacher said.
