Meghan McVey is a teacher's assistant at R.C. Buckley Elementary School in Lansing.
McVeigh was on breakfast duty on January 26, 2018, when a third-grader began choking. She said the student tried eating an entire cinnamon roll and then jumped away.
McVeigh began the Heimlich maneuver. She said she recognized what was happening to the boy due to her training with the American Red Cross.
"He looked at me at that moment and he looked scared. So I knew we were near crunch time. Luckily, a few seconds later I was able to dislodge the cinnamon roll."
Because McVeigh knew what to do in that cafeteria moment, she prevented a tragedy and saved a boy's life.
