Two Endwell Firefighters Recognized as Heroes
Two Endwell Firefighters were recognized as heroes Monday night at the Endwell Fire Department for rescuing an Apalachin woman from flash flooding in July of 2017.
Captain Rob Congdon and Lieutenant John Hussar rescued both Margaret Russell and her dog after she woke up to water flowing steadily through her home in the early morning. The two firefighters gained access to Russell's property by boat after she was stuck waiting for help for over three hours in the pitch black.
Russell said she cannot thank the two firefighters enough for saving her life.
"I'm just so grateful," said Russell. "I want to do something for them, but I just don't know what yet."
"This was a mutual aid rescue," said Endwell Fire Chief Tom Palazzo. "While working with the Apalachin Fire Department and Campville Fire Department, many people were rescued from their homes that night."
