Blood Drive Honors Fallen Officer David "DW" Smith
By Fox 40 Staff.
Some gave of themselves in Johnson City Monday in honor of slain Village Police Officer David "DW" Smith.
The Red Cross held a blood drive in his honor Monday at the Sarah Jane Memorial United Methodist Church, where Smith was a member. Members of the Department, Smith's family, and the community came to donate. They feel this drive is a fitting way to honor his legacy.
"I do know it means a lot to the family and the community and the Department also to see everyone coming out and showing their support, not only in memory of DW but also to help support others in need," said Johnson City Patrolman Katelyn Furman.
"It's important that we recognize what people do fo rus and especially the officer who donated his life for the people," said blood donor Bob Spitzer.
One donation can help save three lives. Smith, an 18-year veteran of the Johnson City Force, was killed in the line of duty responding to a 9-1-1 call on March 31st, 2014.
