Revitalizing Washington Street Pedestrian Mall

Posted: Updated:
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

The City of Binghamton hosted a second public meeting Thursday night to discuss plans on revitalizing the Washington Street Pedestrian Mall.

Mayor Rich David describes the space as a "concrete desert" that has sat empty for years.

Project consultants Environmental Design & Research gathered input from the public as they presented design ideas for the space.

Plans presented included adding a walkway, stage and cafe seating area. They also plan on beautifying the bleak space with trees and an array of colors.

The improvement project planned for the MetroCenter entrance is part of the city's "Arts DECO District" plan.

Construction will begin in 2020.
