Statewide Blood Shortage has Red Cross Calling on Community Members

Posted: Updated:
JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. -

The Red Cross is looking for help from local community members as New York State is seeing a shortage of blood.

Colleen McCabe, Executive Director Red Cross says, that the 4th of July holiday had community members from across the state traveling and brought in hundreds of fewer donors to blood drives.

The shortage of donors has left the Red Cross with less than a three-day supply of most blood types.

McCabe says that blood transfusions are one of the most frequent things needed during hospital visits, but that it's just one of the many things local hospitals like UHS, Lourdes, and Wilson hospitals use blood for.

"Blood is something that cant be manufactured, there's nothing synthetic that will be comparable to real blood so we rely on these donors every single day, people right here in the community, hospitals right here in the area using Red Cross blood supply so really it's the lifeblood of this community" says, McCabe.

For anyone interested in donating blood the American Red Cross does offer a phone "app" which has locations for local blood drives as well as local donation centers. Also on the "app" donors can see where their blood is going to help other community members. Just type "American Red Cross" into your phones application service or visit their website. https://www.redcrossblood.org/
