Posted: Updated:

The Broome County Sheriff's Office announced on Tuesday that they have made an arrest in connection to the fire that occurred at the Econo Lodge on July 3rd.

At 6:07 p.m. on July 3rd, crews responded to the hotel located at 690 Old Front St for a fire in one of the rooms on the second floor. Responding deputies observed smoke and flames emitting from room 414 and began evacuating the building.

That's when deputies encountered the occupant of the room, Thomas Sutton, 45, of Sidney. Deputies said Thomas was refusing to comply to commands to stay out of the building. The 45 year old was then restrained and taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment from injuries sustained prior to the fire.

Multiple fire departments responded to the scene and were able to contain the fire to one room before extinguishing it. The hotel sustained heavy smoke damage and all guests were moved to another room in the building, according to Broome County Sheriff's Office.

Broome County Fire Investigators responded to the scene along with Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office to investigate the cause of the fire.  Based off the joint investigation, it was determined Sutton intentionally started the fire.

Sutton was released from the hospital on Tuesday and taken into custody by the Sheriff’s Office Warrant Division.  He was taken to the Broome County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Facility where he will be arraigned before magistrate at central arraignment on the charges.

Thomas Sutton faces the following charges:

  • Arson 2nd Degree, Class B Felony
  • Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, Class D Felony
  • Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, Class D Felony

There were no injuries from the incident.
