Spartans Set for Class A State Semifinal

Posted: Updated:
ENDWELL, N.Y. -

After a weekend of back-to-back walk-off wins, the Maine-Endwell baseball team is heading to the Class A state semifinal game against Section V's Canandaigua Academy Braves at Union-Endicott High School at 2 p.m. on Friday.

"You could tell them they're playing the Yankees and they'd be confident they'd win," said head coach Matt Raleigh. "They are ready to face any opponent."

The senior class has been monumental throughout the postseason, with Adam Rutkowski on the mound and the walk-offs by Joe Mancini and Josh Chandler, a group of guys Raleigh calls selfless.

"There's not just one individual on this team. They do everything for one another."

A win over the Braves would put the Spartans in their third-ever state title game, the first since they won in 2008.

"It would mean everything," said Rutkowski. "We want to make history."
