UPDATE: Watch the full Broome County DA DebatePosted: Updated:
The Republican candidates in the race for Broome County District Attorney squared off in a live televised debate Wednesday evening on WICZ-TV following Fox 40 News at Six.
Candidates Michael Korchak and Paul Battisti fielded questions from moderators Bri Supardi, Anthony Borrelli Public Safety Reporter with Pressconnects and WNBF's Bob Joseph of Binghamton Now radio.
The broadcast was originally scheduled to run 30 minutes but ran 15 minutes longer due to technical problems during three questions.
Once the issue was fixed, WICZ decided candidates should be given the opportunity to respond to the questions. Because the broadcast was free of commercial breaks, candidates were unaware of what had transpired and why certain questions were re-asked until the debate ended.
The video in this article contains the entire segment.
Topics covered in the debate included:
- The relationship between the DA's office and law enforcement
- Prosecuting drug trafficking cases and handling drug addiction issues
- Treatment of crime victims
- Stance on existing diversion programs and specialized courtship
The two candidates are locked in a primary election on June 25th. The winner will face Democratic candidate Debra Gelson.
