Greater Binghamton Disc Golf Holds First Sanctioned TournamentPosted: Updated:
Endicott, N.Y. - Disc Golf is a relatively young sport that is adding hundreds of new course every year, doubling the growth of the sport in the last decade.
A local club, Greater Binghamton Disc Golf is promoting the sport right here in the Southern Tier. A club that was organized back in 2014 and on Saturday, it came full circle when they had their first ever sanctioned tournament, the Southern Tier Open.
"I'm very excited with our continued growth" said Tournament Director Troy Widden. "We started with under a dozen of people and we're up to so much more people now. We're really gaining traction with participants from the rest of the state as well as surrounding states. We're excited to be on the map. People are noticing that Binghamton is an area that they can come and play quality disc golf."
Widden, as well as others tried getting a course installed at Campville Commons back in 2017. Their efforts came to light on Saturday when the Southern Tier Open was held at their new permanent course, Campville Commons in Endicott.
"Volunteer hours is what has really driven these courses to go in" said Widden. "There's many people that have met with the parks, town cities, have gotten approvals and putting in so much hard work to help us get to this point."
"It's really volunteer driven and stems from passion that we all have for this sport and have really done it from the grass roots up."
Fifty-eight members participated in the tournament, after starting out with less than twelve people.
"We're really excited to have an impact in the area" Widden said. " We're enjoying the growth of the sport and we will be putting in a championship course designed by Eric McCabe, a former world champion and course designer, over at Nathaniel Cole Park. So, we will have another course in the area. It's going to be a championship level show case type of course and we're excited about that."
