BOCES Students Refurbish 1949 Chevy Truck For Discovery Center Story Garden

Posted: Updated:

The Story Garden at the Discovery Center has a new addition thanks to students at Broome-Tioga BOCES. The 1949 blue Chevy truck was fixed up by students in the General Automotive Services and Auto Body Repairs classes. Students from the BOCES PALS program planted a garden in the bed of the truck.

When the truck was brought to the students at BOCES, it was rusty and had weeds growing inside it. Now, it's shiny and blue and kids at the Story Garden can sit behind the wheel.

The students who worked on the project are all in 11th and 12th grade. 15-year-old Austin Thomas says he did a lot of welding work.

"I did a lot of welding on the truck, put things together on it, the dash inside the truck, the bed, I did a lot of work on the bed of the truck," says Thomas.

Thomas says he was excited to see kids already playing in the truck at Wednesday's ribbon cutting.
