Southern Tier Supports National CPR and AED Awareness Week

Posted: Updated:

Each year, more than 350,000 Americans go into cardiac arrest, and 90 percent of those attacks are fatal due to a lack of bystander action, according to the American Heart Association.

This week, the AHA and Union Volunteer Emergency Squad are working to educate the public about the importance of CPR training.

"When bystander CPR was initiated, 45 percent of those people walked out of the hospital," said Amy Polhamus, Deputy Director of Operations for Union Volunteer Emergency Squad.

Union offers classes and certifications at all levels, so anyone interested can learn how to save a life.

"Simply learning compressions you have the potential to keep someone alive until EMS arrives," said Gina Chapman, Regional Director for the American Red Cross.

Two years ago, New York made a law ensuring all high school seniors know CPR before graduating.
