Man Charged After Police Find Over 20 Dead Cows

The Otsego County Sheriff's Office have charged a man with animal cruelty after officers found over 20 dead cows on his farm in the town of Maryland. 

Dale E. Putnam, 69, of Maryland, NY was arrested on May 28th after the sheriff's office received a complaint of possible dead animals on the farm located on State Hwy 7. 

Deputies said when they arrived, they could smell the odor of dead decaying animals coming from the barn. 

During the investigation, deputies discovered the remains of about 20 dead cows in the barn, four dead cows in the field, and one cow in poor health from giving birth to a calf and had to be euthanized. 

Leatherstocking Veterinary Group and the Susquehanna SPCA assisted the sheriff's office. 

According to the sheriff's office, the remaining cattle were taken in by local farmers for safe keeping until the end of the investigation and court proceedings.

Putnam faces six counts of Agriculture and Markets: Overdriving, torturing and injuring animals: failure to provide proper sustenance, a class A misdemeanor. He is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
