Jail & Bail: NY Giants Players Discuss Broome's Incarceration Rate

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

Two NFL players team up with local activists in Binghamton Thursday night to discuss a problem plaguing Broome County.

Over a hundred came out to the United Presbyterian Church for a community forum on Broome County's high incarceration rate.

Among the speakers at the Bail & Jail Community Forum were New York Giants players Michael Thomas and Antoine Bethea, who joined members of Citizen Action of NY, PLOT, TruthPharm, JUST, and Broome Tioga NAACP on stage.

Also speaking at the forum are former Broome County inmates who shared their personal story on how unaffordable bail impacted their lives .

"I want them to realize that they don't realize what's going on in side Broome County jail. It's a very dangerous place for the inmates," said Judy Arnold, a volunteer at Citizen Action.

"The biggest thing was just seeing how engaged everyone was in this community," said Michael Thomas, a defensive back with the Giants. "They all wanted to see changes made, and they were taking the time to come out here, not only to see what we thought but what were the solution that were possible and to really take action."

"A number of families have been affected by different things, really just the outreach of people really wanting to see change and, you know, I was excited to be a part of it tonight," said Antoine Bethea, who plays safety for the Giants.

Currently, Broome County has the highest incarceration rate in New York State.
