Bearcats Softball Sets Out For America East TournamentPosted: Updated:
Vestal, N.Y. - Binghamton (17-27) is the No. 6 seed and begins play at the America East Tournament at the University of Hartford against No. 3 Stony Brook on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The winner will face No. 1 UMass Lowell on Thursday at 11 a.m. The tournament once again has a double-elimination format.
The Bearcats just snuck into the postseason as the bottom seed. However, their not viewing that as a negative thing but instead, allowing it to help excite them even more.
"We obviously didn't want to be in the spot where we were fighting to make it into the tournament" said head coach Michelle Johnston. "I think we have faced a lot of injuries this year and we feel good where we're at right now. We know if we can play our game we can play with anybody in our conference."
"We're really confident right now" said junior catcher, Sara Herskowitz. "We've been focusing on ourselves and taking advantage of every opportunity that we get."
The Bearcats pitching staff finds themselves at the bottom of the America East with a team ERA of 5.50 after allowing 276 runs. Their fielding also sits at the very bottom of the conference with 68 errors. However, the team believes if they can limit those mistakes and respond to those mistakes, they will be just fine.
"I think we've seen in games that we haven't played our best" said Johnston. We had one or two really big innings that we've been giving offenses extra opportunities. We need to limit those. It's okay if we make a mistake but we need to make sure we respond. Those are the games that when we've done that, we've done well."
"If you make a mistake it's okay. You just need to learn from it" said Sarah.
The Bearcats are making their eighth appearance in the America East Tournament, having last won the event in 2015. They are 10-13 all time, having also recorded third-place finishes in five of the other six years
