BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

Broome County officials have declared April 16th a day of Education and Sharing in honor of what would have been the 117th birthday of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Nicknamed "Rebbe," the Rabbi is described as the most influential in modern history.

The day of Education and Sharing has been recognized nationally since 1978. Rabbi Levi Slonim, director of programming and development for the Rohr Chabad Center for Jewish Student Life at Binghamton University, says the day honors Schneerson's beliefs that education should not be limited to gaining knowledge for a career, but instead focus on bettering yourself as a person and making an impact on the wider world.

"Not just thinking about what it is that will get us the most digits, the most amount of digits on our paycheck, but thinking about what it is that is important to us in life," says Slonim, "What is my purpose of creation? Why am I here in this world? And what am I doing to achieve that?"

Schneerson is the only Rabbi to ever receive the Congressional Gold Medal.
