Twelve Section IV Wrestlers Are Still Competing For A State TitlePosted: Updated:
Albany, N.Y. - The 2019 New York State Public High School Association Wrestling Championship started Friday morning at Albany's Times Union Center.
Twelve Section IV wrestlers have the opportunity to be crowned a state champion on Saturday. Semifinals start tomorrow at 10 a.m. and include some interesting match ups.
John Worthing (Tioga) vs Brody Oleksak (B-G/Afton/Harpursville)
As a team, the Tioga Tigers lead Section IV with 36.0 points and four wrestlers are competing in the semifinals tomorrow. Brady Worthing (132 pounds), Austin Lamb (145), John Worthing (138), and Stephen Taylor (285).
Trentyn Rupert (Newark Valley) vs Stephen Taylor (Tioga)
Chenango Forks entered State's with four wrestlers, however, only Lucas Scott will be advancing to the semifinals. Lucas Scott (Chenango Forks) 33-1 defeated Kyle Tillich in the quarterfinal.
Norwich and Walton/Delhi placed two wrestlers apiece into the semifinals.
Defending state champion, Junior Dante Geislinger and Mikey Squires advanced for Norwich.
Seniors Caleb Robinson (120) and Chandler Merwin (126) moved on for W/D.
Vestal's Todd Degroat (195) advanced to the quarterfinals after winning by fall over Michael Babbcort.
