Binghamton Family Searching for Kidney Donor

Posted: Updated:

Billy Nanni has been married for nearly 40 years, he has 3 kids, and 8 grandchildren with a 9th on the way.

Nanni has been battling Poly cystic Kidney Disease since 1999... a hereditary disease that his mother fought for 9 years.

From 1999 to 2005 Nanni was on Dialysis until he got his first kidney transplant

Nanni says "I went in feeling 80 and came out of surgery feeling 18, the color in my face came back, the whites in my eyes got brighter and every little ailment I had was gone".

That kidney would change his world... until 2015 when it failed. Three and a half years of dialysis later Nanni is still on the kidney transplant list waiting for that call that will once again change everything.

Nanni is currently going to dialysis 3 days a week, 5 hours a day from 5:30 AM to 10:30 AM. Nanni says" normally he's so exhausted all he wants to do is sleep which is normally what he does as soon as he gets home.

So far Nanni's search has led to 4 people trying to become donors but unfortunately none were matches.

For anyone interested in becoming a donor it's as simple as a few blood tests to test for compatibility for tissue typing, blood typing and crossmatching.

For those worried about medical expenses don't be, Nanni says that the patient's insurance and transplant will cover the procedure 100%.

Nanni also says " you can call upstate in Syracuse and say I'm interested in donating a kidney... mention my name and they can start the process... There's also a couple of websites they can go to for research".

Normally only roughly 10,000 kidney transplants are done per year in the United States.
