Another Jury Pool Summoned For Aaron Powell Murder Re-TrialPosted: Updated:
Jury selection continues for the double murder re-trial of Aaron Powell, with a fresh pool or prospective jurors called to Broome County Court on Wednesday morning. The court already went through one batch of around 100 potential jurors on Monday and Tuesday and six have been sworn in for the trial so far.
With this new jury pool, the process is starting over again. Jurors are now being called one at a time behind closed doors to be asked further questions about possibly knowing individuals on the witness list.— Amy Hogan (@AmyHoganTV) January 9, 2019
This is the second trial for Powell, who was convicted of the murder of his estranged wife Christina Powell and Mario Masciarelli in 2014. That conviction was appealed and overturned in 2017 due to a conflict of interest with a juror.
That first case was prosecuted by the Broome County District Attorney's Office, while this time its being handled by a special prosecutor, Christopher Grace. Powell is being represented by Bruce Barket, the defense attorney who represented Cal Harris during the Tioga business man's fourth murder trial in which he was acquitted.
Jury selection is expected to take the rest of the week with testimony beginning Monday or Tuesday of next week.
