Attorney Paul Battisti announced his candidacy for Broome County District Attorney on Friday, hours after Steve Cornwell made it public that he would not seek a second term.

"I was born and raised in Broome County and want to do everything I can to make it the best and safest place it can be. My experience as a successful private practice attorney and as an active community volunteer has prepared me for the challenges that our next District Attorney will face," said Battisti in a statement sent to media outlets.

Battisti, a Republican and Broome County native, has primarily worked as a criminal defense attorney during his 14 years of working in private practice.

He represented former then Broome County Executive Debbie Preston in 2016 after she was arrested over the unauthorized use of a Town of Conklin credit card.

Preston would lose the election but avoided jail time after agreeing to a plea deal in City of Binghamton Court in April 2017.

She ended up paying a $1,000 fine and pleaded guilty to one count of official misconduct.
