Maeve Donnelly Leads SV As Only SeniorPosted: Updated:
Conklin, N.Y. - Girls high school basketball is officially here and the Susquehanna Valley Sabers tip-off their season tonight at 7:45 p.m. against Seton Catholic Central. The Sabers will step on the hardwood as the defending Class B State and Federation Champions, but they'll do it without 7 of their graduating seniors from last year. Therefore, all eyes will look to their only senior and only returning starter, center Maeve Donnelly.
"Everyone's trying to find their role in the game this year, which is very different for me because I need to step up" said Maeve.
"I mean, I was still a leader last year, but now, everyone looks at me for everything."
Everyone being the six juniors and five underclassmen who play on the Varsity team this season and who will look to Maeve throughout the entire season. Head Coach Chad Freije described the All-State player as one of the most impactful defenders arguably throughout the entire state, but also expressed how more vital her offensive role will be this season than in past years.
"Offensively we're expecting her to do a lot more this year than last year. Last year she just played a role and this year, she's expected to be the center of attention, our main go to person" said Freije.
"She's excited for the new role and we're excited to play off of her."
