Mets announce 2018 Sterling Award WinnersPosted: Updated:
Binghamton, N.Y. - The New York Mets have announced the 2018 Sterling Award Winners, recognizing the top performing prospect or MVP at each level of the Mets organization. Former Rumble Ponies 1st basemen Peter Alonso was named Player of the Year after putting up monstrous numbers throughout Binghamton and Las Vegas. Rumble Ponies Pitcher Justin Dunn was awarded Pitcher of the Year after coming up to Binghamton from St. Lucie. Jeff McNeil was also awarded the MVP of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
Dunn started in 24 minor games in the 2018 season. The twenty-two year old tallied 9 starts with the St. Lucie Mets and 15 starts with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. The Boston College alum was drafted 19th overall by the New York Mets in the 2016 MLB Draft. Dunn made his Double-A debut on June 9th and since then, tossed 105 strikeouts, collecting a 4.22 ERA. Dunn went 6-5 with Binghamton and struck out 156 hitters.
McNeil started his historic 2018 season right here in Binghamton with the Rumble Ponies. McNeil played 57 games with Binghamton and hit 14 home runs finishing with a .327 batting average.
Alonso never made it to the show this year but did put up career numbers throughout his 2018 season. The 23 year old split his year in Binghamton and Las Vegas collecting 36 home runs with a .285 batting average throughout both teams.
Gimenez was named MVP of the St. Luicie Mets for the 2018 season. Before playing Double-A in Binghamton, the 19 year old collected 6 home runs, 30 RBI with a .282 batting average with the St. Lucie Mets.
