Ivanka Trump Visits Cortland County, Talks Tax Reform And Creating Jobs

Posted: Updated:

First Daughter Ivanka Trump stopped in Tully, NY on Monday morning. The senior advisor to the president toured Suit-Kote, a family owned and operated asphalt and road maintenance company called Suit-Kote.

Appearing alongside Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, Trump spoke about tax reform and creating jobs, citing the tax bill passed in December as her reason for the visit to Suit-Kote.

"It's incredible to come back into a community and see the affects of a policy that you deeply believe in," said Trump during a forum discussion.

Frank Suits Jr, the president of Suit-Kote, says his company has seen positive change as a result of that bill.

"Our employees ended up getting a net %5 raise. %2.5 was directly their pay that was not withheld by the government and our company matched that 2.5 to equate to a %5," says Suits.

Of course, not everyone agrees with that tax bill. Protestors stood at the end of the Suit-Kote driveway for the duration of the event. Both the Suit-Kote forum and Ivanka Trump's Syracuse appearance later in the day were closed to the public.

The tour of the Tully business is part of Tenney's re-election campaign. Tenney voted in favor of the tax bill in that 227-203 vote in the House.

"We needed the lower tax rates to help our businesses," says Tenney.

In response to Tenney and Ivanka Trump appearing together on Monday, democratic Anthony Brindisi, Tenney's opponent for the 22nd district seat, released the following statement.

Ivanka Trump and I both know that people shouldn’t fear losing their job when caring for a newborn, sick loved one, or a family member serving overseas. In the Assembly, I was proud to vote for New York’s paid family leave plan, and disappointed when Claudia Tenney voted against it. Claudia Tenney is again out of step with the needs of middle-class families in Upstate New York. Instead of a private taxpayer-funded campaign event, perhaps Ivanka can educate Claudia Tenney on the importance of Paid Family Leave. The media should ask: why doesn’t Claudia Tenney agree with Ivanka and me on Paid Family Leave?
