World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

ENDWELL, N.Y. -

Elder abuse comes in many forms and is one of the most under reported crimes in the state, according to the New York State Attorney General's office.

The New York State Assembly passed a resolution earlier this week, declaring June 15th as Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The most common forms of abuse include physical abuse and financial exploitation.

Financial exploitation really is the fastest growing type of elder abuse right now” said Janette Cyganovich, Broome County Family Abuse Prevention Coordinator.

Cyganovich says one of the most common types of financial exploitation tactics is the ‘Grandparents’ scam, where someone calls up and acts like they’re your grandchild and wants you to send them some money because they got in trouble.

Other types of elder abuse include sexual, emotional or physical abuse as well as neglect, abandonment and self-neglect.
