Sanford Animal Abuse Pre-Trial Hearing Postponed

Posted: Updated:
DEPOSIT, NY -

Accused of neglecting animals, John Elmer was scheduled to appear in Town of Sanford court on Friday for a pre-trial hearing. That hearing has been pushed back. According to the Broome County District Attorney's office, Elmer's lawyer never showed up. This is the second time in this case that the defendant's lawyer hasn't made it to a court date. Elmer's arraignment was also rescheduled for the same reason.

The Binghamton man was arrested back in April when police seized 11 animals from his Town of Sanford property. Police say all those animals were emaciated or had serious medical conditions. This is not the first time Elmer has been accused of mistreating animals. He was arrested on 86 felony counts of animal abuse in 2005. Those charges were pleaded down to misdemeanors, according to the Broome DA.

On May 11th, Fox 40 found out pet store chain PetSmart became aware of Elmer due to him volunteering at a Cortland spay/neuter clinic that brings cats to PetSmart for adoption. The Executive Director of CNY SNAP told Fox 40 that they had parted ways with Elmer and PetSmart representatives confirmed the organization was reinstated as an adoption partner for the store.
