MacArthur School Alum and Grammy Winning Songwriter Talks To Students

Posted: Updated:
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

Not everyone gets to meet with a Grammy winner. Fourth and fifth-graders at MacArthur Elementary School did that and more on Friday.

MacArthur alum and award-winning musician Athena Desai answered questions, sang and played her acoustic guitar as one of the school's Career Day guests.

Desai even dropped in during an orchestra practice, sharing her songwriting process and her experience as a MacArthur School music student.

"I absolutely remember my first talent show, when the school was a completely different space and my music teacher. That stuff really stays with you."

Desai says she hopes her chat helped students understand that they are already musicians and that she helped motivate them to keep moving.

Desai co-wrote a song on the Infamous Stringdusters 'Laws of Gravity' album, which won a Grammy award in January for Best Bluegrass Album.
