Travelers Hit the Road for Memorial Day Weekend

Posted: Updated:
KIRKWOOD, N.Y. -

Roads were busy Friday as people packed up and headed out for the holiday weekend.

Fox 40 caught up with some travelers on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

“It’s a great weekend to go, it’s beautiful weather. So far so good, we got on the road by 7 o'clock coming out of Philly, up the Northeast Extension, we had no problems.” - Kathy Clarke, Traveling to Ontario, Canada

Memorial Day travel is up 6% from last year according to TripAdvisor, with over 40 million Americans hitting the road.

Drivers at the New York Welcome Center and the Pennsylvania Welcome Center on I-81 were all heading somewhere different, one family was heading to New York City to see a show, another was heading to Rochester to visit friends.

Most travelers weren’t scared of the traffic in their future, even though 30% of people started their journey on Friday.

“I don't think we usually have any troubles, even if we hit traffic it’s honestly not that bad, as long as you are just calm and kind of take traffic as it comes, then it’ll be alright.” - Tabitha Klingensmith, Traveling to North Carolina

Despite gas prices being high, and traffic expected to be at all all-time high, it still didn’t stop people from heading out to enjoy their holiday weekend.
