Tractor Trailer Rips Out Wiring From Binghamton Plaza, Leaves Stores Without Power

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -

Stores in Binghamton Plaza were left without power Thursday afternoon after a tractor trailer struck electrical wires, ripping them out the building.

Around 4:45 p.m., Binghamton Police and Fire, as well as NYSEG responded to 33 West State Street after a tractor trailer struck wires in the rear of the building causing a utility pole to snap and pulling out wires that were attached in the building.

As of 5:30 p.m., two stores, Rent-A-Center and the Pet Shop, were left without power.

Electrical damage on the inside of the utility room was reported where a breaker box was pulled off the wall as a result of the incident.

“Fortunately there was no fire extension into the building itself which was something we were concerned about. Was the building actually catching on fire,” said J.C. Colling, Binghamton Fire Captain.

Colling said repairs will take a few hours as NYSEG replaces the pole and reattaches all the wiring.

No injuries were reported. Binghamton Police are looking into what caused the incident.
